The AllenPort story
Joel Allen, the founder and visionary behind AllenPort Co., had worked with more than his share of office networks over the years of creating and managing his own companies, and frankly he found them almost impossible to deal with. They were complex, arcane, and expensive. He asked why computing had to be difficult, and then gave his own response by creating a company with a single purpose, “Simple computing.”
It took a few years and attempts to find what he was looking for, and then 3 years ago he hit on the solution: a service that provides a single, easy to use interface to your data, with access from anywhere regardless of whether you are online or not. The service utilizes the power and convenience of the local computer; meanwhile, regardless of the machine, the user always sees his data exactly as he left it, with all the files up-to-date and ready.
AllenPort combined all the common data management functions, backup, recovery, remote access, synchronization, and file sharing, into a single service so that, as far as the data is concerned, AllenPort is the computer. And because it needed to be even simpler, almost all the data management is done invisibly, real time, so the right things just happen: backup is continuous so you never worry about scheduling or waiting for it; the most up-to-date version of each file is automatically downloaded so you never work on an old version; and multiple computers are kept completely in-sync with each other without doing anything.
How did this solve the fundamental problem confronting businesses that need to protect their data but also need people to access it from across the globe? AllenPort’s answer is as simple as it is elegant: Keep the data local so it is secure and under control, but keep an encrypted copy on a server so it is available and free to access everywhere.
The Future of Computing
That was a good start to simple computing, but computing is not just about the data. There are applications, email, software distribution and updates, peripherals like printers, and of course support.
That’s why AllenPort is expanding its service to include Hosted Exchange to handle email, calendars, and contacts. AllenPort also supports distributed printing, not just within the office but anywhere there is internet access. Of course AllenPort provides 24 x 7 support and with AllenPort employees who know the service thoroughly, not from contracted call centers. Finally, AllenPort is addressing the need to have the right applications on whatever computer is being used, beginning with Microsoft Office.
The goal is to have a huge part of a business’ IT Department available in a single download that takes a short time to setup, is easy to configure and maintain, and is affordable.
AllenPort: Not quite IT in a box; we don’t need the box.
